Another Review for Long Shadows

I'm happy to report that Long Shadows has received another good review, this time from female western enthusiast Laurie Powers.

The story simmers with tension, partly because of James' skill with point of view, but the unfolding mystery is what keeps the story moving so quickly and powerfully.

You can read more at Laurie's Wild West.

Western Wednesdays (Updated)

Just wanted to point you to Howard Hopkins' Dark Bits blog. He's talking Westerns and mentions a new feature that will appear on his blog, this blog and a few others - 'Wild Bunch Wednesday'. Over the next 4 weeks (starting 8 July if all goes to plan), myself (as Terry James), Howard (as Lance Howard), Ray Foster (as Jack Giles), Gary Dobbs (as Jack Martin) and IJ Parnham will be providing new excerpts from their currently available books. They'll be short and themed providing you with a few minutes entertainment and showing what the authors and genre have to offer. So look out for more news on Wild Bunch Wednesday. It's gonna be a heck of a ride.

New Review of Long Shadows

There's a new review of Long Shadows at fellow author Nik Morton's blog Writealot. He has a fresh view of it, which is nice and will give prospective readers another insight into what to expect.

Thanks Nik.

An unexpected confidence booster

I heard from a reader today who has just finished reading my first novel Raven Dove. She was full of praise for the story and totally enamoured with the characters. She said she really fell in love with Chad and can't wait for the follow up!

Although I had to disappoint her with the news that it was a one off, it reminded me why I like writing - to entertain people. I might not always find it easy or pleasurable, but a kind word makes it all worthwhile.

Happy reading!

UKs first Armed Forces Day

I like to think I keep abreast of current affairs, so imagine my surprise when I opened my Yahoo homepage and saw that today is the UKs first Armed Forces Day (previously Veteran's Day). Until then I was not even aware of the change, which presumably should have catapulted the occasion into the public psyche, making the post WWII generation more aware of the part the armed forces play. Bizarre isn't it that we all become very British when Andy Murray is playing on Centre Court at Wimbledon or England are playing in the Euros or World Cup, but this hardly warrants a headline.

So, I say bravo to all past, present and future members of the armed forces. They choose to do a tough job these days and even though I may not always support the politics, I always support the men and women on the front lines.

Great Bob Hope one-liners

Someone sent me this and it made me smile so I thought I'd pass it along.

I HOPE THIS WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE AND IN YOUR HEART. Tribute to a man who DID make a difference:

ON TURNING 70 'You still chase women, but only downhill'.
ON TURNING 80 'That's the time of your life when even your birthday suit needs pressing.'
ON TURNING 90 'You know you're getting old when the candles cost more than the cake.'
ON TURNING 100 ' I don't feel old. In fact I don't feel anything until noon. Then it's time for my nap.'
ON GIVING UP HIS EARLY CAREER, BOXING 'I ruined my hands in the ring... The referee kept stepping on them.'
ON NEVER WINNING AN OSCAR 'Welcome to the Academy Awards or, as it's called at my home, 'Passover'.'
ON GOLF 'Golf is my profession. Show business is just to pay the green fees.'
ON PRESIDENTS ' I have performed for 12 presidents and entertained only six.'
ON WHY HE CHOSE SHOWBIZ FOR HIS CAREER ' When I was born, the doctor said to my mother, 'Congratulations You have an eight-pound ham' ..'
ON RECEIVING THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL 'I feel very humble, but I think I have the strength of character to fight it.'
ON HIS FAMILY'S EARLY POVERTY 'Four of us slept in the one bed. When it got cold,
mother threw on another brother.'
ON HIS SIX BROTHERS 'That's how I learned to dance. Waiting for the bathroom.'
ON HIS EARLY FAILURES 'I would not have had anything to eat if it wasn't for the stuff the audience threw at me.'
ON GOING TO HEAVEN 'I've done benefits for ALL religions. I'd hate to blow the hereafter on a technicality'

Farrah Fawcett

I've never been a big fan of Farrah Fawcett, athough I do think in her dramatic roles she was a very good actress. Therefore, I was sorry to hear that she has finally succumbed to her cancer. No doubt there'll be a made-for-TV movie made at some point but I doubt they'll find an actress who can pull off the big hair and the huge smile with as much flair as she did.

Today, my thoughts go out to everyone who is suffering from cancer and to those people who have lost someone to such a horrible illness.
